12 tips for Christmas and beyond
Whist short and sweet, we hope that this will come in useful. Starting in early 2018, we will produce a series of articles covering news, views and advice including expanding on the subjects below.
Be yourself
Simple but true. It is a common claim that you have to “sell” yourself to get ahead. People can see through an act and if not, it will usually end in tears.
Always be willing to listen to advice
Experience often shows us that there are many ways to get to where you want to go. Never be afraid to ask for the views of others. The may give you an alternative view or simply confirm that you are on the right path.
Think before you act
“Act in haste, repent at leisure” was one of my Fathers favourite phrases. Sometimes easier said than done, but take time to consider the full picture before you make a significant decision
The devil is in the detail
It is easy to overlook the small things that can make a real difference. Look beyond the headlines to see what really matters
Have a plan
You shouldn’t start a major project or journey without having some idea of the end goal. Clarify your objectives and adapt where necessary
Do your homework
“Knowledge is power”. Never underestimate this. Trying to do something on the fly rarely ends well.
Do your sums
Decisions that look good on the surface may well have unintended consequences or associated costs. Consider all aspects together rather than in isolation
Be decisive but not impetuous
Decisions rarely have to be made in an instant. Don’t be afraid to sleep on a major decision before committing to an outcome
Be honest…
If you tell a lie then you just have one more thing to remember. Enhance within reason but never lie….it’s not worth it
Be a diplomat
There is a time and a place to vent your spleen. Whilst it can be very tempting to be totally honest about a situation, sometimes diplomacy will serve you better
Commit to the process
“Do or do not. There is no try.” When you decide on a course of action you should give it your full attention and do what you can to make it a success.
Don’t be put off by rejection
Even the most successful people have not had it all their own way. Listen to and learn from feedback to assess how you can develop and improve
We would welcome your views and feedback as well as suggestions for future topics for analysis and discussion.
Best Festive wishes from all at Brevere Group and we look forward to working with you in 2018
